Meet the Director

John Berry

Entering his tenth year in public education, John Barry V currently serves as the Director of Bands and Choir at Littlefield High School. Previously, he held positions as the Director of Bands in Levelland ISD and Head Band Director at Seminole Junior High. Throughout his career, Mr. Barry’s students have consistently been successful in UIL Marching Band, Concert & Sight Reading, Solo & Ensemble, and the ATSSB All-State Band process, with many pursuing music education at the collegiate level. His most recent accomplishment was with the Littlefield Junior High 7th Grade Band advancing to the State Finals in the ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series in 2026.

Mr. Barry earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Texas Woman’s University, where studied both instrumental and choral music education. He is an active member of the Association of Texas Small School Bands, Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association, and currently serves on the ATSSB Region 16 Review Committee. 

Driven by a commitment to student growth and campus-wide collaboration, Mr. Barry actively works to create inclusive music opportunities for all students, firmly believing that every student deserves the chance to experience the opportunity to make music. Raised in Jacksboro, Texas, Mr. Barry has a deep appreciation for the spirit of small-town life. He is steadfast in his belief that every child, regardless of the size of school, deserves access to a quality music education. Assistant Directors

Michael Lester

Michael Lester was born and raised in west Texas, graduating from Abilene High School and later completing a Bachelor of Music degree from Abilene Christian University. He has experience teaching band in Hamilton and Del Rio and is now in his second year as the Littlefield Junior High band director. He comes from a musical family, with both his parents, brother, and wife also having studied music. In his spare time, he enjoys performing with the Lubbock Concert Band, cooking, fishing, and taking care of his two dogs, Goose and Banana.

 

The Littlefield Junior High Band has earned division I ratings at UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest over 30 times, with most years resulting in sweepstakes. In addition, the band has consistently earned division I ratings at the Irons Music Festival, Greater Southwest Music Festival, and Abernathy Band Festival. The band also regularly submits recordings to ATSSB OPS Contest and has advanced to state 39 times, winning 4 of those.

Daniel Timmerman

Mr. Timmerman has been teaching for 15 years, with the last 14 in Lubbock ISD at Coronado High School and Mackenzie Middle School. He’s led or assisted with just about every type of ensemble in the Band world, including Marching bands, Concert bands, Jazz bands, outdoor and indoor Drum Lines, and Solos and Chamber ensembles. Prior to Lubbock, he taught at Pottsboro ISD in Pottsboro, TX, serving as the middle school band director and assisting with the high school band. Band and student accomplishments include: multiple UIL Sweepstakes Awards, consistent appearances in Marching Band Area and Area Finals, a Top 5 finish in the National Jazz Foundation for Musical Excellence Competition, multiple “Overall Outstanding” and “Outstanding in Class” Festival awards for Marching, Concert, and Jazz bands, multiple TMEA All-State selections, an ATSSB All-State Jazz selection, and multiple Outstanding Soloist awards at Texas State Solo and Ensemble.

Mr. Timmerman graduated from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2010, and earned a Master of Music Education degree from Texas Tech University in 2020.

Mr. Timmerman is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) and Texas Jazz Educators Association (TJEA). He served as the TMEA Region 16 Jazz Coordinator 2014-2022. He enjoys performing on saxophone throughout west Texas and eastern New Mexico, and is a member of the Frontier Big Band, Finessence Dance and Show Band, and the Cactus Jazz Orchestra.

Personally, Mr. Timmerman’s hobbies include bowling, woodworking, and motorcycles. Mr. Timmerman enjoys family life with his wife, Jennifer, their son and bonus daughter, Grayson and Samantha, and their granddaughter, Violet. The Timmerman family has a love for animals. They have two dogs, Evie and Lola, and two cats, Bella and Tucker.
