Notice from Mr. Read: Former Student Possession of Firearm

Posted Date: 03/08/2022

NOTICE TO PARENTS

MARCH 8, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FROM:       Mike Read

                     Superintendent of Schools

Littlefield, Texas:

On the afternoon of Tuesday, March 8, 2022, the school was made aware that a former Littlefield ISD high school student brought what appeared to be a firearm to school and showed it to one or more LISD students at approximately 1:10 p.m.  There were no reports that any threats were made against the school or any students during this display of the firearm to such students. Upon receiving the report, the District immediately contacted law enforcement to investigate the matter. Although the investigation continues, I can confirm that the former student is no longer on school grounds and does not appear to present a threat to students.

Littlefield ISD District policy, as well as state law, considers the possession of a firearm on school premises by a student or a minor to be an extremely serious matter, and it is being treated as such.

All required actions concerning this matter have been taken by the District, but we will continue to fully cooperate with all authorities having jurisdiction over this event as needed and to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Please be assured that our students’ safety is paramount to us. We will continue to take all measures to maintain a safe and secure environment at all of our campuses. Due to state and federal privacy laws, however, and to preserve the integrity of the investigations by other authorities, the District will not disclose any further information concerning this matter. Feel free to contact me if you or your children have any safety-related concerns.
